4th Annual Shop with a Cop

Shop with a Cop is a unique program in which Conyers Police officers and Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office deputies share Christmas with children and families in Rockdale County who are in need.  Officers and children spend time together, one on one, in an unforgettable holiday shopping experience.  This is one way Conyers Police officers make a positive contribution to the community.  Shop with a Cop is sponsored primarily by Conyers Wal-Mart.  A number of local businesses assist in allowing Shop with a Cop to take place each year. Some of the businesses are:  Value Village, Quick-Trip, Chick-Fil-A, McDonald's, Bell’s Grocery, Conyers Honda, and many more, along with private donations.  A very special partnership with Mr. and Mrs. Claus has been made and it always brings a smile to the faces of the children to see them and get a hug.

History of Shop with a Cop

The program began in 2008 with sponsorship by the Conyers Police Department. In the first year, Conyers Wal-Mart was the sole partner. With the 2008 program the CPD was able to provide Christmas to 32 kids. In 2009, the program provided Christmas to 56 kids. Thanks to an increase due to generous contributions by local businesses and caring individuals in 2010, Shop with a Cop helped 97 kids have a Christmas.

How are children selected to participate?

Children are recommended for participation in the program by police department members, school employees, social agencies, court system, citizens and other family agencies. The criteria for the children are: they must be a resident of Rockdale County, they have a social or economic need and they have not participated in the Shop with a Cop program in the past.  We understand that times are hard for the community but they cannot currently be receiving support for Christmas through another charitable program and must be between the ages of three to 13 years old.

When is the 2011 Shop with a Cop?

The event will be Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the Conyers Wal-Mart.  Parents and guardians are notified in advance. The location to meet so that the child and officer are partnered up is the Value Village Thrift Store in the same shopping plaza.  The children are given the donated money via a Wal-Mart gift card and are allowed to spend it as they wish. Police officers in uniform keep track of the spending and help the children with gift ideas.

Goal for 2011

The goal for the 2011 Shop with a Cop is to reach 110 children this season. With your help, we can make it happen!
